I always look at building relationships the same way we were taught to make friends when we were younger. If you remember the lessons from your youth they included: Be nice, ask them to play with you, share your toys, and don't punch them. As simple as it sounds it should remain the same lessons for relationship building today: Be yourself, be nice, reach out to others and take the initiative, share your knowledge and experiences and at the end of the day if you have difficulty communicating - Don't punch them :)
