I know, I know, you're probably thinking "That's a comic book - that's not a 'real' book!" But comics are very popular, just look at how many have been turned into the movies... There have been numerous studies that indicate comic books promote reading among the young (in fact, I know someone who completed his masters in education with a dissertation on this subject). This particular storyline is about fairy tale characters who must live in the real world (similar to the television show Once Upon a Time, though this predates that show by about eight years). In fact, it has won several awards - including being listed as a "Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers"!No one commented yet

There's a TV series around this book series- but this seems to get good reviews.1 comment:
Carla BI would recommend Pretty Little Liars as well. it got my daughter reading very quickly. Now she can't wait for them to add books to the series.

Tara Hunt suggested My Darling, My Hamburger from Barnes & Noble
I read this book as a young teen (or maybe even 11 or 12) when I hated to read and fell in love with Paul Zindel's stories. I also loved The Pigman. It's a classic. No one commented yet

Tara Hunt suggested The Shining from Barnes & Noble
I know it seems a bit adult, but if your teenager is 14 or older, Stephen King is the way to go (or any horror/suspense). For some reason, the teens love this stuff. It keeps them reading. It helped with my son who refused. No one commented yet

Jennifer Cyr suggested Wake (WWW Trilogy) (9780441018536): Robert J. Sawyer: Books from Amazon.com
You didn't mention why she didn't like Twilight (not into paranormal? Poor writing annoyed her?) but in case it's that she's just not into fantasy, here's a science fiction recommendation. Wake is the first in a trilogy but can definitely be read alone too. Amazon.com: WWW: Wake (WWW Trilogy) (9780441018536): Robert J. Sawyer: BooksNo one commented yet

This is a great recommendation. It's about to be released as a movie and several celebrities (such as Kristen Bell from Veronica Mars and Melinda Doolittle from American Idol) have fanatically tweeted about it. Also, the Obama children have read it.
