I'm a huge fan of Adobe Illustrator, but not a fan of the price. I don't use it enough to justify paying the $650. I don't have a recent enough version to upgrade. I'm on Mac OS 10.7.2 (lion). What is a decent vector drawing program that I can output eps/pdf files as well as the various other image files that I could buy? Bonus for software that is downloadable online (instead of ordering boxes).

I would try Aviary - it does pretty much the same thing with Vectors plus so much more with graphic design and photo editing tools. I find it simpler than Photoshop too.5 comments:

andy de la luchaI want to second this recommendation with a tip- I use Inkscape all the time. By some measures Inkscape is easier than AI. I successfully open AI files all the time- but often have to a few rounds of "ungroup" on the files.
A warning- Inkscape on Mac has some annoying system requirements. It's possible you already have these things installed (I know you're geeky :D), but it's not as simple as a single .dmg, unfortunately.To add a comment, you need to Sign up or Sign in.

This is one of them. GIMP.app is specifically ported to Mac OS X so don’t mistake it with GIMP. Before this, running GIMP.app requires X11 to be installed but there is now an experimental native version which doesn’t need X11 to run. I’ve tried it, takes a little long to launch but it works. Another +1 for Aviary. There are also some decent choices listed here:

I'll be the first to admit that Illustrator is the top choice for a lot of reasons and it works very well. But if you're looking for a decent alternative you can't beat Aviary, VectorDesigner or Inkscape.
